Your Gut May Have More Influence on Your Muscles Than Anyone Realized
For decades, the equation for muscle strength has seemed simple: lift weights, eat protein, rest, repeat. New research published in the prestigious journal Gut — with an impact factor of 26.2 — is adding a surprising variable to that equation: the bacteria living in your digestive tract.
Scientists from the University of Granada, the University of Almeria, and Leiden University Medical Center identified a specific gut bacterium called Roseburia inulinivorans that is positively associated with significantly greater muscle strength in both humans and mice — and its abundance decreases with age, right when muscle loss typically accelerates.
What the Research Found
The researchers analyzed stool samples from two groups: 33 older adults and 90 younger adults. They sequenced the bacterial DNA in each sample and cross-referenced it against two physical performance measures — handgrip strength and VO2 peak (maximal oxygen consumption during exercise).
Within the Roseburia genus, one species stood out: Roseburia inulinivorans. Older adults who had detectable levels of this bacterium showed 29% greater handgrip strength compared with those who did not. In younger adults, higher levels of the same microbe were linked to both stronger grip strength and higher VO2 max. Their muscle fibers were also larger overall.
To confirm causality rather than just correlation, the researchers fed different Roseburia strains to mice that had their gut microbiome depleted with antibiotics. The mice given Roseburia inulinivorans gained approximately 30% more grip strength over 8 weeks compared to the control group — without any additional exercise.
The Gut-Muscle Axis
The findings support what researchers are calling the gut-muscle axis — the idea that gut microbiota don’t just influence digestion and immunity but actively regulate muscle metabolism and strength. Lead researcher Jonatan Ruiz stated that the findings provide solid evidence confirming the existence of a gut-muscle axis in which this identified bacterium positively modulates muscle metabolism and muscle strength.
The mechanism appears to involve changes in metabolic pathways inside muscle tissue. The bacterium shifted muscle fibers toward fast-twitch (type II) fibers — the kind used for short intensive efforts like sprinting and lifting weights — and altered how muscles process amino acids and produce energy. The researchers noted that amino acid depletion in the gut by the bacteria may actually force muscle tissue to use alternative pathways that strengthen it, though this mechanism is still being investigated.
Why This Matters for Healthy Aging
The finding that Roseburia inulinivorans is less abundant in older adults than in younger adults is particularly significant. Muscle loss — sarcopenia — is one of the primary drivers of frailty, reduced mobility, and poor health outcomes as we age. If gut microbiome composition is a contributing factor to that decline, it opens new avenues for intervention beyond just exercise and protein intake.
The researchers are positioning this bacterium as a potential probiotic candidate for nutraceutical interventions targeting age-related muscle wasting. That product doesn’t exist yet for commercial sale, but the research points clearly toward where this field is heading.
